Eastern Europe

Who would have imagined I would have gained the opportunity to combine in one trip seeing Skull Tower, an authentic Serbian dinner (with Fries) and travel to the heart of Transylvania including visiting Bran Castle!

10/5/18: Eastern Europe Update

Am pleased to report a pleasant stay in Sofia. The weather has been outstanding.

Yesterday started with a walking tour of Sofia’s central district. I didn’t realize the yellow brick road extended here from Kansas. Clearly there is no place like home.

We ended the day at Rila Monastery inspired by hermit in 835. The only serious downside was the 2.5 hour bus ride (one way).
Speaking of bus travel, I get to experience crossing a hard border via bus today. Apparently everyone needs to exit the bus with their passports for the Serbian crossing.

I plan to update you from Belgrade (wifi permitting). Been taking lots pictures. May already have the cover image.

Ciao,

10/8/18: Traditional Serbian dinner (with fries)

After much walking and visits to some of Belgrade’s historical sights, we ended up on Skadaska street for an authentic Serbian dinner. Go Ahead provided the following description “Experience a traditional Serbian dinner in the heart of Belgrade. Sample Serbia’s signature dishes, such as grilled meats, a cheese plate and bread-and-cheese pie while being serenaded by guitar players performing the local Tamburasi-style folk music.”

The entree was in fact a minced beef patty, two pieces of chicken and two each of two types of sausage (beef and pork). In short, all the major food groups were represented. The side dish acompanying the (massive) entree was an equally large serving of fries. I struggle to understand the”authenticity” of fried potatoes being considered traditional Serbian fare.

On the cool plus side the entertainment was excellent. The restaurant’s tight quarters by necessity incorporated the wait staff into the performance. The image below is but one taken by my phone.

Ciao,
